BIO

EDUARDO PIAGGE, ABC - DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Director of Photography based in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

With a degree in Journalism from the University of São Paulo, I have always been driven to tell stories that delve into relevant themes within Brazilian society. I experienced this firsthand early in my career while working alongside Drauzio Varella for several years. During that time, I shot a series of health documentaries for TV Globo’s Fantástico, addressing major societal issues for a massive audience.

Following that experience, I served as DP on several documentaries, most notably Tropicália. Produced by Fernando Meirelles (City of God, The Two Popes) and directed by Marcelo Machado, the film explores one of Brazil’s most significant artistic movements, featuring its founders: Caetano Veloso, Tom Zé, and Gilberto Gil.

In 2012, I co-founded Boutique Filmes, where I remained a partner for 12 years before departing in 2024. While at Boutique, I shot 3%, one of Netflix’s first international originals. Directed by Cesar Charlone (City of God, The Pope’s Toilet), the first season of the sci-fi series reached a vast international audience, becoming the most-watched non-English language show on Netflix at the time. I served as Director of Photography for three seasons and produced the final two.

For Netflix, I also shot Omniscient, a crime thriller created by Pedro Aguilera (3%). This was followed by Summer Heat, the first Brazilian series to utilize extensive virtual production. Additionally, I worked on the true-crime series Elize Matsunaga: Once Upon a Crime, where I directed the fictional sequences.

Social and political narratives that explore relevant themes remain at the core of my work. For Globoplay, I shot the thriller Rota 66, which earned me a nomination for Best Cinematography at the Brazilian Association of Cinematographers Awards (ABC Awards). The series is based on Caco Barcelos’ bestseller, which first exposed systematic police violence in Brazil.

Most recently, I shot Sutura for Prime Video, a thriller about a young resident forced to become a "doctor for the underworld" to sustain his career. The show addresses the immense hurdles that inequality and racism impose on impoverished youth in Brazil—a country where Black and mixed-race citizens make up about 56% of the population yet face significantly higher rates of systemic exclusion. The series spent five weeks in the Top 10 on Prime Video Brazil. For my work on Sutura, I received another ABC Award nomination for Best Cinematography.
